House Holds Child Nutrition Hearings The House subcommittee on education reform held its first hearing on the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 and the National School Lunch Act, which is scheduled for this year. Chairman Mike Castle (R-DE) opened the hearing addressing his concern for the rising obesity rates in children and the subsequent conditions traditionally associated with adulthood, including Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. The committee also will address the challenges faced by the WIC program as well as issues related to school meal reimbursement, the School Breakfast Program, and other proposals to strengthen the nation's child nutrition programs during this reauthorization. Witnesses included Surgeon General Dr. Richard H. Carmona and Undersecretary of Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Eric Bost.
